Chapter Sixteen

53 Hours

‘Holy shit, Charlie! That was amazing!’

‘It was a fluke.’

‘No way.’

‘It happens sometimes.’

We’re a few blocks away from the Smouldering Maiden when Cassandra finally catches up with me. We had left at the same time but she had come bounding after me, jumping onto my back as she sang my praises.

‘No, something was different this time,’ she says, still on my back. ‘I’m gonna say that it was my love and support.’

‘Yeah, right,’ I say sarcastically. Still, I’m struck by what has just happened like a freight train has run me down. Nothing like that has ever occurred before – what I had said to Cassandra was a flat out lie. Usually the adrenaline doesn’t kick in anymore, especially now considering the fate that I’m staring in the face.

Still, I’m shaken. I pocket my hands to keep the sight of them from Cassandra. My body is a little bruised and cut up, but otherwise I’m fine.

I don’t know what it is that caused me to take control.

For now, I’m not going to think about it.

‘We need to go somewhere quiet,’ I say, still carrying her. ‘Get off the streets for a few hours. People might be looking for me.’

‘I know a place. Three blocks away. Next left.’

She jumps down from my back and morphs back into her human form.

‘Next left plus three, that’s… That’s Ashward Tower.’

‘Yeah.’

‘It’s a business block. High rise. What are we going there for?’

‘Trust me.’
